Favorite Brands and Polishes of 2014

HAPPY NEW YEARS!!  I have been challenging  myself to pick out a few favorites from this past year. Since 2014 was my first year of blogging (I've been at it about 6 months now) I've probably got an easier time narrowing down my choices then some others but that's not to say it was easy at all.

For me this year has been all about my discovery and love for indie polishes. I went into blogging thinking OPI was the pinnacle but learned that indie - and global indie brands really are where its at.

Favorite Brands of the Year

Mystic Muse Nail Lacquer (US)

At the same time I've begun my journey, so has Mystic Muse. This breakout indie brand has really inspired me this year. C. Lynn the creative genius behind Mystic Muse puts so much thought into her inspiration for her polishes. Offering a wide variety of colors, finishes and styles while still staying true to her brand.

Upscale, trendy and 5 Free these polishes just continue to get better and better. I hear she has some surprises up her sleeve this year and a new subscription box launching (with a monthly limited edition polish)!

A England (International -UK)
With all the great indies not only in the US but from around the world I had to add a second favorite brand and that was easy - A England. Adina Bodana is the creative master behind the flawless bijou holos that A England is known for and perfected. Her collections have a muse or historical influence to them, giving them almost a life of their own. I started off with Her Rose Adagio and some 15 polishes later am on my way to owning every single one.

Honorable Mention: Picture Polish (AUS), Aurora Lacquers, KBShimmer, Fair Maiden Polish
Mainstream Favorites: Zoya, Julep

Favorite Polishes of the Year

I couldn't bring myself to actually rank my favorite polishes - its kinda like choosing a favorite child - so I am listing (in no particular order) my favorite polishes from 2014.

piCture pOlish

Have you met pIcture pOlish from Australia? I am continually blown away by the fabulous collaborations this brand does with bloggers all over the world. Below are just two of my favorites. You should see my wishlist for this brand - its LONG. One day I would love to be chosen for a collaboration - that will never happen in a million years, but hey - a girl can dream right?

Dragonfly was created in 2014 with Lucie aka Lucy's Stash (Blogger/UK). Its a deep teal green with bijou holo finish (a mix of delicate small holo particles and coloured flecks that look amazing in bright sunlight and three dimensional in low lights). I just got this polish but already its one of my favorites - and I'm usually hesitant about greens! I'm working on a full review of this polish and will feature the link here when finished). If this isn't on your wishlist, it should be!

Fools Gold was created in 2014 with Sammy aka The Nailasaurus (Blogger/UK). Inspiration is Flecks of gold as seen through deep tropical waters. This is one of the first polishes I reviewed and swatched (review here). I just love the color of the blue and all the small gold flecks floating throughout.

Mystic Muse Nail Lacquer

Mouse King is from the limited edition Nutcracker Collection. A color shifting polish. Its base is a regal purple that shifts thru, Gold, Purple and red depending on the angle the light hits it.  I found that the "red" shift looks a lot like the Pantone Color of the year too - talk about being 'on trend'. This polish has a deep pearlesent purple hue in low light which is really pretty. Read my full review of Mouse King and the rest of the Nutcracker Collection here.

Bonfire is from the Autumn Reflections Collection (review here) and is Mystic Muse's best selling polish of 2014! A sophisticated duochrome that is a smokey grey with a mauve base, but don't let her fool you, she has a inner fire that shifts through gold, orange-red and fuchsia! My first reaction to this polish was WOAH. It is such an amazingly complex color! At first I wasn't even sure what color to call it! In direct sunlight you get more of the purple/fuchsia. In low/indoor lighting you see more of the grey/mauve. Read the rest of my review on the Autumn Reflections Collection here

Here is another of my favorite mani's of the year using Bonfire and Night.

Aurora Lacquers -Sailor Eyes

Aurora Lacquers is as close to a 'hometown favorite' as it gets for me. Based about an hour or so away from the DC metro area I love the colors and quality that they produce. Sailor Eyes is really the indie polish that started it all for me, so it has to be one of my favorites!  Shown below with Golden Tiara (another polish I adore!) this is also one of my favorite mani's of the year!

A England - Crown of Thisles, Queen of Scotts

This year's Elizabeth & Mary Collection (see my review here) was just a knock-out from beginning to end, but for me these were not only standouts from the collection but of the year!
